Deer Velvet Myths
Myth #1: It’s a steroid
No – it is far more than that! Mountain Red Deer Velvet Antler contains IGF-1 & IGF-2, which are a class of polypeptides similar to those found in steroids. They are also naturally occurring substances, which are found in Deer Velvet Antler along with other ingredients including proteins, amino acids, collagen and lipids. This results in a product, which helps to improve the body’s strength, stamina and athletic performance, joint heath and general well being.
Simply put, in many sports steroid use is banned. Deer Velvet Antler (as a powder form) on the other hand is NOT a banned substance.
Myth #2: Deer are killed for their velvet
Our product is humanely collected under strict quality control methods to ensure animal health and welfare. All animals are free to wander on our open ranches in New Zealand.
Mountain Red guarantees that no animal is harmed in the collection of its Deer Velvet. Once the Deer Velvet has been harvested, the boys are released straight back out onto the farm to carry on with their day. So Mountain Red Deer Velvet is wonderfully sustainable! We exceed all velveting standards, fully accredited by Deer Industry New Zealand and are independently audited.
Myth #3: There are additives in Deer Velvet Antler capsules
While many products contain unnecessary fillers, additives or preservatives, Mountain Red Products do not! We supply only premium, 100% natural, sustainably harvested New Zealand Deer Velvet Antler. That is all there is in each capsule, 100% pure Velvet Antler just as nature intended it to be. Minimal processing, maximum potency.
Myth #4: Deer Velvet contains harmful chemicals
Some companies use the potentially harmful chemical xylazine as a sedative during the collection process. We do not! Mountain Red guarantees that all of our velvet is xylazine free! This is better for our deer and better for you!
100% natural, pure New Zealand Deer Velvet Antler– nothing else.
Myth #5: Deer Velvet supplements are low quality
Many are! Most companies make no claim as to the grade of velvet used, or the quality or source. All Mountain Red Deer Velvet is of the highest grade, fully traceable back to individual farms, and independently tested and analyzed to ensure full compliance with the TGA Compositional Guidelines for Deer Velvet Antler Powder. The easiest way to check this is to ask if the product you are purchasing has an AUST L number. Mountain Red Deer Velvet Antler does.

Myth #6: There’s nothing special about Deer Velvet Antler
Our Mountain Red Deer are reared in the clean pristine mountains of the South Island of New Zealand where they are able to roam on our free range ranches. Our wonderful boys grow our Deer Velvet Antler annually and Deer Velvet has a long, safe history of traditional use in a number of cultures around the world. Deer Velvet Antler is also useful in times of fatigue, physical exhaustion and stress. We think that makes Deer Velvet Antler pretty special!
Myth #7: The lighter the Deer Velvet Antler the better it is
Velvet is NOT antler! Antler is hard inactive bone, velvet is soft and a rich source of bioactives. One easy way to tell the difference is by looking at the colour of the product – velvet is a rich reddy brown colour.
Be wary of products that are light in colour, as they are most likely product with a higher percentage of bone in it. At Mountain Red we harvest our premium Deer Velvet Antler at the optimum time during the season to ensure that all the amazing properties are well maintained and to ensure we are harvesting Deer Velvet Antler, not bone.
Because we work so closely with our boys who grow our wonderful velvet we know exactly when that velvet is ready to harvest and back out into the paddock they go. Here at Mountain Red we guarantee the quality of our velvet – we know our boys grow the very best deer velvet possible.
Myth #8: Deer velvet is only used by top class athletes
Not so, Mountain Red Deer Velvet iAntler s used by a huge cross section of society – young and old, male and female, elite athletes through to weekend warriors.
For the weekend warriors who play a multitude of sports, those who enjoy a round of golf, or that game of tennis, runners, swimmers or those who just want to “keep fit” also get the many benefits offered by regular use of our Deer Velvet Antler.

Myth #9: Extract or Sprays are the best way to take Deer Velvet
So called velvet sprays gained notoriety when a number of high profile athletes were linked to their use. The key issue with sprays is they may not in fact be produced from Deer Velvet and can be of dubious quality.
Unlike Mountain Red Deer Velvet Antler which is a ‘whole extract’ containing the full range of bioactives, these spray usually contain minuscule quantities of IGF. We believe that nature has it right, so here at Mountain Red we bring you our Deer Velvet Antler just as our boys grew it for us.
Myth #10: There’s no proof it works, or is safe
Deer Velvet Antler has a long, safe history of traditional use in a number of cultures around the world. Deer Velvet Antler has been used for over 2000 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine for yang weakness to tonify qi. Deer Velvet Antler is also a listable therapeutic product in Australia, and has been studied extensively in New Zealand for over thirty years.
